There is something about fudge that makes it particularly appealing to us when we travel - perhaps the knowledge that, really, calories don't count when you're on vacation. It is this factor that must allow fudge shops to flourish whenever there are sure to be tourists. And Cape Cod has its fair share of shops featuring fudge.
We set out to find the best fudge the Cape has to offer. We tested the classic chocolate and penuche (vanilla, made with brown sugar), with and without nuts, along with various other flavors.
We encountered fudges both mediocre and unpalatable. There was chocolate fudge that tasted more like sugar than chocolate, and penuche that seemed saturated with artificial vanilla flavoring. Textures varied from grainy and crumbling to almost chewy.
Then we sampled the perfectly wonderful fudge at Provincetown Fudge Factory. They make more than a dozen flavors, and the texture of each is smooth and creamy. The penuche, with or without nuts, is buttery and delectable. The chocolate is rich and full of flavor, and serves as a great base for other additions, such as caramel and chocolate raspberry. We also recommend the peanut butter, the chocolate chip swirl (penuche with streaks of chocolate and bits of chocolate chips), and the rich double Dutch chocolate.
The Provincetown Fudge Factory also sells its fudge to other sites throughout the Cape; call them for information. --The Boston Globe, June 18, 1998 |
